Peconic Bay Estuary Boating
Solar Electric Boat Rules
- Opinion:
- I would like to personally have just one class - boats that
are entirely independent of utility power ie; totally solar
powered from what is built into the boat. This is what we should
encourage. How boats arrive at the start should also be under
their own power. No boats may be towed by fossil fueled boats
out to race course within 30 minutes from the start.
Classes:
- Solar-Electric, run and charged by on board
- Solar Electric, charged by shore power
- Purely Solar with no batteries
- Handicap:
- Lwl/displacement handicapping formulas used
- Course:
- Round Robins, honoring n4, rb and n26 (ccw or cw at committee
boat) Start/finish off Gally Ho and fixed mark - How do electric
boat races start?
- Ideal Conditions:
- Tides should average neutral Winds should be light Sunshine
a plus (postponements only if windspeed exceeds 12 knots at
start - suggest early start to avoid the afternoon southwester).
- Prizes:
- Scratch boat Conversion made from hull over 10 years old
New conversions and new designs
- Entry fee:
- Non-commercial - $30 Commercial (those sponsored by commercial
enterprises) - $much higher Tshirts, caps etc.
- Rules:
- Right of way motorboat rules? Some sailboat rules? Practice
races? Check out web for more experienced groups to see what
they do.
- Sources:
- Motors, batteries, potential hulls available for conversion,
solar equipment, small wind chargers probably ok but must be
left in position during race otherwise considred utility power,
all shoreline charging must be done by solar or utility power,
NO fossil fuel generators.
- Tow boat:
- It should NOT be expected that some boats may run out of
juice before end of race. Those that do should anchor and vhf
for assistance tow to starting line (no obligation to comply)
